While travelling people love to listen to current music on their ipod. However, it becomes very costly to keep purchasing new music every week from itunes and from buying CD’s. That’s why the world of file- sharing has become so popular and successful. This uses the tactic of ‘cover-up’ where ‘the file–sharing community’ (Martin, B, Moore, C and Salter, C. 2010) has been developed. This ensures that people can download any music at any time from anywhere in the world. This has become a major thing in today’s music industry (Martin, B, Moore, C and Salter, C. 2010) Many artists are losing money due to their listeners downloading it for free rather than buying their CDS. It has become so easy to find websites and just download any music for free. I personally do not know many people who still go to a music shop to buy a CD. Why would you? , when the majority of the world owns and list to music on an iphone, ipod or ipad. Plus most people, who listen to music in their car have the ability to have ipod connection. When going on a road trip, they would organize their favourite music list on their ipod and away they would go.
These file sharers are from all around
the world and are providing people who have the Internet the opportunity to
have free music. However, I feel that even though people are downloading music
for free, this is provides them the opportunity to hear new songs that will
encourage and influence them to go and see these artists/ bands in concert.
Thus I feel that the music industry is not losing money but getting access to
their listeners and influencing them to support their music. Many artists feel
the same way and are now giving away free ep’s of their music to fans, in a way
of stopping fan’s going to other sources for music. For example, Ed Sheeran
(Check him out! believe me you won't regret it http://edsheeran.com/) and 5 seconds of summer gave away free music to fan’s
on their website. As such, fans will get
a feel for the music and they will fall in love with it so much that they will
want to buy concert tickets and merchandise. I feel people are not going to pay for things
if they do not have to. Therefore more artists should release free ‘ep’s’ and
take advantage of the free publicity and use it as a way to reach their
audience. This will allow them to have the ability to control what songs come
out and when. Having file sharers will only ‘greatly increasing their exposer and
in return it will support the band and the music industry. They should not be
threatened by this new technology, they should just embrace it as away to have their
music being enjoyed and exposed to a lot more people.

I like how you thought out this topic Emily. Firstly the point about people hearing songs they would not have otherwise heard is a good one because even if people had the time to listen to the radio or watch MTV, those platforms are not delivering music to their audience as well as they once did - a lot of talk on the radio and too much non music content on so called music TV. Your point on concerts is excellent as artists probably make a lot of their money from touring and a look at someone like Pink's tour schedule shows that file-sharing hasn't affected ticket sales but may have improved them. I agree that artists should start giving away more free music to their fans and allow them to share it. It's a good PR move and the artists who connect best with technology and their fans have been the most successful and popular in recent times, eg. Lady Gaga
ReplyDeleteGood job.
hey emily!
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you concluded the blog with a resolution to the proposed problem! It supported your perspective towards the issue, as well as leaving the reader with the question of what could be. If only it were that simple!
I also, like the way you have personalised it, adding reference to road trips, and use of the apple products. However, I think you could have furthered the readers understanding perhaps by sharing with us the impact that file sharing has had on your life, if any!
A nice read, well done!
Emily,
ReplyDeleteFree music, yes please!
You’ve made a strong point about purchasing music being costly. This ensures that people can download any music at any time from anywhere in the world. It has become so convenient to get music in the comfort of your own home that going to the CD store just seems un-necessary. Downloading music at any time, anywhere makes it extremely accessible and linking this whole concept straight to globalisation would be highly effective for your blog.
You need to remember to somehow connect what you’re talking about all back to globalisation, as this is what the class is all about. I agree that artists should embrace the change and use it to advantage them. I love the use of rhetorical questions, the only concern I have is for you to double check you’re spelling, found a few errors. Otherwise excellent blog.
I think you've really made this post relevant and relatable. You mention the convenience of downloading music as opposed to buying it, going on road trips and being more willing to spend money for concerts- I have definitely experienced all these things and would guess that most other people of this generation have too!
ReplyDeleteThe problem of pirated music is definitely a tricky one. While I doubt that anyone could argue that most well-known artists aren't making enough money, I have come across quite a few rebuttals stating that the loss of revenue from music trickles down to people are paid much, much less. Even so, I completely agree with your view that more artists should harness the concept of giving out free music in order to captivate fans.
Well done!
Hi Emily!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with everything you've written on this blog post. And more to the point I think majority of people which have internet access would hold similar views to you when it comes to downloading! If it is available and easy then why not. I think you've added a nostalgic feel to your blog with referring it back to holidaying and road trips whilst still on topic. I also like that you have shown that you understand both sides of the argument whilst still proving your side of the argument by offering a solution such as bands embracing the technology to gain popularity. Another good feature of the blog is your use of embedding the video while promoting people to go and watch it rather then just placing it within your blog without any reference to it! You've referred back to the reading and even though there is only one main quote throughout the blog your blog demonstrates that you understand the reading and unit material!
Hi Emily! Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and coming up with a suggestion of giving out free music. I’m really in favour of your idea of allowing people to download music for free. Like you said, it allows people to get a feel for the music and fall in love with it (or hate it). I am one of those people who will never buy music or go into a CD shop to buy an album (unless I’m an absolute ‘hardcore’ fan of a particular artiste). Most of the time I will download music for free or steal my friends entire mp3 album. And if I do like the artiste’s music, I am more than happy to purchase tickets to their concert! So your point on concerts is great, as many artistes are very successful from their tours.
ReplyDeleteHowever, what could be done better in this post is to relate the whole thing to globalisation. Otherwise, great job Emily!
Emily, this blog post is informative, yet keeps the reader interested due to the fact that it is relatable to almost every person from any demographic. It immediately captures the attention of the reader by discussing music and iPods, which is a part of the lives of most people and the costs involved with downloading music onto these expensive gadgets. The conclusion of the blog also gives the reader a possible solution to this problem and provides a great opinion on how file-sharing can be used to positively attract an audience and subsequently a flow of income. This post could have included some more information on this issue in relation to globalisation, however, it was a fantastic read!
